3-18[?]-52 REFUSAL TO RETURN TO CULINARY ASSIGNMENT. Culinary inmates were removed from the kitchen on afternoon of March [?] during reorganization of this unit. All inmates assigned there were interviewed subsequently, to learn if they would return to duty under new regulations, etc. Karpis stated he believes we are punishing inmates in culinary unit because of a few screw balls that mess up the details. He believes that cooks, dismachine workers and bakers should be provided with a bath before they return to cellhouse in the evening. He has enough of culinary unit and would not go back to work under the rules read to him. Karpawicz is undoubtedly one of the ring leaders in opposition to orderly [indeciph.] and regulations in operating the culinary unit. N.F. Stucker, Assoc. W. ACTION: PLACED IN T.U. UNTIL FURTHER ORDERS FOR REFUSAL TO WORK IN CULINARY UNIT. REMOVED FROM MERITORIOUS COMPENSATION AS OF Mar. 1, 1952. WARDEN, Approved. N.F. Stucker, Associate W. 5-18-53 PROPOSITIONING AN OFFICER. On Sunday 5-17-53, while I was in west end of cellhouse, Karpawicz-325 stopped on way to recreation yard and asked if he could talk to me. He stated that he had talked it over with some of the "old timers" and was acting as spokesman for them. He said they were interested in seeing that the men returned to work in the shops. He also stated that some of the inmates might lose some good time if the work stoppage continued. He felt sure that if some assurance was given that no good time would be taken and as he put it, "nobody holding the bag." and if the inmates in the Treatment Unit were returned to the regular population, the inmates would go back to work in the shops. E. Rychner, Acting Captain. TO S.T.U., CLOSED FRONT CELL, BULL, DIST. Agitator, active in organizing resistance, etc. L. Delmore Assoc.
