John Stadig

The first man to attempt to escape from the Rock did so from a moving train that was taking him back there after a trial in Portland, Oregon. Stadig jumped in Richmond, California and remained at large for eight days. The counterfeiter broke both hands in the fall, however, and was unable to feed himself. He finally surrendered in Martinez, California, protesting, however, about the treatment which would await him when he returned to Alcatraz. The crippling of his hands and the stiff good time sanction placed against him led to his suicide while being transported to Springfield, Missouri in 1936.
