The Army pioneered the Model Shop prior to the transfer of Alcatraz to the Bureau of Prisons. Here it made furniture for the local bases and trained prisoners in useful job skills. The BOP took over the operation in 1934. Henri Young was working in the Model Shop the day he stabbed Rufus McCain. Young took a pair of sharpened planer blades he'd found hidden behind one of the lathes and went downstairs in the old Model Industries Building to slay his victim.
