I saw the childhood scene in the Aviator as bringing home the emotional force of his germ phobia - this is his level of fear, as if he were forever the child being warned about quarantine.

Pam: Thank you. Actually Inman mischaracterizes what Freudianism is all about. Freud specifically ties adult madness to childhood sexual obsession with the parent.

I didn't see Freudianism in The Aviator, but a more complex psychodynamic involving a mixture of experience, "self-talk", and chemical imbalance. Inman seemed too eager to abandon early childhood experience all together. In my book, that makes her suspect.

Joel, thank you for your writing on this subject. It helps me understand a little better what my sister might have been going through with her own issues and how things might have turned out differently for her. There's nothing I can do to change the past, but the insight helps me come to terms with it.
